Most of these systems could be designed to work beautifully for the customers who actually exist.

Picture this: You're trying to update your utility account information online. The form times out after 15 minutes. When a phone call pulls your attention away, everything you typed disappears. No save function. No "pick up where you left off." Just gone.

The instructions come in dense blocks of text with no bullet points or clear steps. You reread the same line multiple times, trying to parse what comes next. When you finally call customer service, an automated voice rattles off seven menu options so fast that by the time you remember the first three, you've forgotten the rest.

This is a story about untapped potential. It's about designing for the humans who will actually use these systems.

The Myth of the Perfect User

Smart companies are discovering a new definition of efficiency. Instead of optimizing for processing speed or data handling, they're optimizing for customer success. Real efficiency means customers can actually complete tasks successfully.

When you design a system that works with real life—imperfect focus, human memory, and natural interruptions—you're designing for humans as they actually are. Life is beautifully messy. People have kids running around, jobs pulling them in five directions, brains that process information in wonderfully different ways, senior executives whose time is never their own.

The opportunity here is massive. 71% of users with disabilities will choose to stay and engage when a website works for them. That's not just completed transactions. That's proof of smart, inclusive design creating real value.

What do I mean by real value? Isn't inclusive design just another costly government requirement? Dignity means the system assumes you're capable, even if you need reminders, pauses, or re-entry points. It's the AI saying, "Here's where you left off, want to continue?" instead of "Session expired, start over." One makes you feel supported. The other makes you feel broken.

It's also about tone. If someone mistypes something, don't flag it in red like they failed. Quietly suggest, "Looks like a typo, should I fix it?" That's dignity.

Dignity means not spotlighting struggle. The system flexes naturally, like it was designed for all kinds of brains and bodies, so no one feels singled out as the "special case."

The Training Data Opportunity

Next-generation AI systems have the opportunity to learn from richer, more diverse data that includes neurodivergent users from the beginning. When you train on varied user journeys, you build systems that recognize different engagement patterns as valuable signals instead of errors.

The opportunity isn't adding accessibility later. It's building it in as a competitive advantage from day one.

What does accessibility-first training look like? It means collecting stories and data from people who don't fit the supposed norm. ADHD, autism, mobility challenges, low vision, single parents, chronic illness. Not as an afterthought, but as foundational training input.

AI needs pattern diversity. Neurodivergent patterns often look like pauses, retries, nonlinear paths, extended time. If the system never sees these patterns in training, it assumes they're mistakes instead of valid ways through.

We need lived-experience feedback loops. Real people with disabilities continuously testing, saying "This nudge helped" or "That made me feel stupid." Then let the AI learn from those corrections, the way a good coach adjusts after watching how you move.

The Business Case for Inclusive AI

Here's what companies miss: accessibility isn't a burden. It's an innovation engine.

When you give someone the option to save progress or chunk steps into smaller pieces, it doesn't just help people with ADHD. It helps the mom juggling toddlers, the employee on lunch break, the person dealing with a sudden emergency, the person who just lost their loved one to an accident. Flexibility is efficiency, because it reduces the number of times customers have to start over, call back, or give up altogether.

The hesitation often comes from familiarity rather than cost. Businesses have established patterns for understanding their customers, and expanding that understanding feels like new territory.

When companies make those shifts—chunk steps, add flexibility, design for interruptions—something beautiful happens. The so-called "mainstream" customers discover these features make everything easier too. Universal design creates universal benefits.

Getting Implementation Right

If you're deploying agentic AI for customer service, the most critical thing you cannot skip is designing for interruption and re-entry. That's where dignity and efficiency intersect.

Put real, diverse humans in the loop before launching code into production. Don't just test with your product team or engineers. Bring in customers with ADHD, seniors, people using assistive tech, parents juggling kids, non-native English speakers.

Watch them try to use the system. Listen to where they stumble, where they get frustrated, and just as importantly, where they feel respected.

Accessibility gaps don't show up on whiteboards. They show up in lived experience. And people who've spent years fighting with systems not built for them often won't even report the struggle anymore. They're so used to the invisible labor of making things work that they don't notice it.

That's why observation matters more than surveys.

Instead of contorting to fit the system, the system flexes to fit us. If someone gets distracted mid-task, the AI doesn't shame them. It saves their place and says, "Welcome back, let's pick up here." If their brain needs instructions chunked, it delivers them in clear steps.

The bigger shift is emotional. Dignified AI means people stop walking around with that quiet, constant sense of failure. They stop second-guessing themselves. They don't feel less capable just because they need different rhythms.

That energy currently spent masking, compensating, or recovering from tech friction gets freed up for creativity, work, family, life.

When systems are designed this way, everyone benefits. Parents with kids tugging at their sleeves. Older adults who process more slowly. People multitasking at work. We all get tools that meet us as we are.

The future isn't just about better AI. It's about removing the daily drag of invisible labor and replacing it with confidence. A digital world where neurodivergent brains aren't always swimming upstream, where we're swimming with the current, and sometimes even leading the way.

That's what AI as executive function support really means. Not just smarter tools, but partners that understand how wonderfully varied human minds actually work.
